Reality TV Takes A Swift Kick In The...you get the point

Being Mary Jane BET

We have a lot to talk about so let's get started.  It's all about the Single Ladies, The Haves and Have Nots and Being Mary Jane!

The Fall 2013-14 television season rolled in roaring: Scandal, Person of Interest, The Black List and bowled out leaving us thirsty and desperate for edgy, grown-up, insightful, controversial conflict that we can discuss and debate.

Instead, we were left with unReality TV in the likes of The New Atlanta, Shahs of Sunset, Mob Wives, Basketball Wives, Vanderpump Rules, The Braxtons, Real Housewives of Atlanta, New York, Orange County, Beverly Hills, DC and Miami, and the most dreadful, Doctor's Wives, Preachers of L.A., Thicker than Water and Bravo's latest sickening travesty Blood, Sweat & Heels.  Oh let us not forget Love and Hip Hop, NYC and Atlanta.

Now before your pantyhose get into a knot, there are a host of others and I may have mentioned your favorite, but the truth is, change the ethnicity of the cast and/or the city: New York, LA, Atlanta (I have to sneak in Jersey) and it's all the same.  We see groups of contrived conflict between self-absorbed wanna-bees willing to risk their lives and love for the sake of the boob tube.  Let's be clear, some of the aforementioned as well as others are my Haagen Dazs too.  But you know how you feel when you've haven't had your favorite food in a while and the moment you bite into it, you really get why you've missed it?  And you vow to never ever let it go again.

That's what happened this week with the season and series premieres of VH-1's Single Ladies--back after a two year hiatus--OWN's The Haves and Have Nots and BET's Being Mary Jane, respectively.

These shows exploded all over the screens for their first episodes.  They left us wanting more and wanting to kick them in the throat for taking so long to come back to us.  I digress.

You think I'm the only one?  According to popular blog site TV by the Numbers, Single Ladies viewership was up 51% over their second season opener.  And Deadline Hollywood reports Being Mary Jane came in with 3.3 million viewers for the night, trumping the coveted #1 cable spot and beating the beloved Breaking Bad record.  Haves and Have Nots registered 2.8million on the viewer scale, not bad numbers at all for a once fledgling OWN.  BET and OWN are definitely taking seats at the table of big boys announcing their arrivals.

I for one am thrilled and not fooled, unReality TV is not going away.  I don't advocate that it should.  I just want a balance of good, no great television with a choice.  I want my choice to be one other than completely turning off the television.

Single Ladies airs on Mondays, VH1 9pm est/pst  The Haves and Have Nots airs on Tuesdays 9pm est OWN   Being Mary Jane airs on BET Tuesdays 10pm est.  check listings for channels
